God’s Free Gift

The Gospel

Understanding God’s offer of salvation for all people.

The Good News of Jesus Christ

The gospel is the greatest news that has ever been given to mankind. God has revealed this message to us in His written Word, the Bible.

Your Need

The gospel offers eternal life as a gift to anyone who will receive it.

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

John 3:16

This gift of eternal life is offered to you as a sinner who deserves to perish. The Bible is very clear that all people have sinned against God. Because God is perfectly righteous, all sinners must spend eternity separated from Him in a place called the Lake of Fire.

as it is written, “THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE;

Romans 3:10

God’s Provision

Because of God’s great love for all people, He sent His Son, Jesus, into the world to provide salvation from this horrible consequence. As the Son of God, Jesus is fully God and fully man. This means that He is the only one qualified to provide salvation.

It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all.

1 Timothy 1:15

The Bible tells us that when Jesus died on the cross He carried the sins of every single person who ever lived. Carrying your sin, He died in your place. He took the death penalty that belonged to you.

and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.

1 Peter 2:24

and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.

1 John 2:2

Jesus’ death on the cross satisfied God the Father’s righteous judgment against sin. Jesus perfectly accomplished this salvation work paying the sin penalty for all people. Therefore God the Father raised Him from the dead never to die again. On the basis of that completed work, God offers you salvation from the consequences of your sins as a free gift.

Receiving the Gift

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9

Grace and faith are the two sides of receiving this gift of salvation.

Grace is God’s part. Grace means God has done everything for you. No one else can offer you eternal life. Jesus’ death for your sins is the only payment adequate to provide it.

Faith is your response to God’s grace. Faith means trusting that God has done for you what you cannot possibly do for yourself. Faith in the gospel is simply trusting that Jesus’ death on the cross was adequate to completely pay the consequences for your sins.

God’s gift of salvation is completely undeserved and cannot be earned by anything you do. Through your faith in the gospel, God gives you eternal life. Eternal life means much more than simply living forever. It means that you are placed into a close personal relationship with God which will never end.

This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

John 17:3

If you have received this gift of salvation by grace through faith, you can rest assured that you have eternal life as a permanent gift from God. You can never lose it. Nothing can separate you from the love of God.

and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.

John 10:28

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:38-39
